If we had to name the single biggest reason houseplants fail, it wouldn’t be watering. It’s light. Almost every plant we’ve ever been asked to “diagnose” was sitting somewhere too dim, and the watering problems came afterward. So before you buy another fertilizer or blame your tap water, let’s talk about the sun: what light actually means indoors, how to read your own windows, and how to match the plant to the spot instead of hoping for the best.
1. Why Light Matters More Than Anything Else
Light is food. Plants turn it into sugar through photosynthesis, and everything else you do (water, fertilizer, humidity) only helps the plant use that energy. Cut the light and the whole system slows down: the plant drinks less, the soil stays wet longer, roots sit in that moisture, and rot sets in. That’s why “I only water once a week” can still kill a plant in a dark hallway.
A few things people underestimate:
- Indoor light is far weaker than it looks. Your eyes adjust so well that a room at 200 foot-candles feels bright, while a shady spot outside might be 1,000 or more. Plants notice the difference even when you don’t.
- Light drops off fast with distance. A plant three feet from a window can get a quarter (or less) of the light a plant on the sill gets.

Direct light. Sun rays actually land on the leaves for several hours a day. Think of an unobstructed south- or west-facing window, or a sill where you can feel warmth on your hand. Cacti, most succulents, and sun-lovers like Bird of Paradise want this. Many tropicals will scorch here.
Bright indirect light. The plant can “see” a big patch of open sky, but the sun’s rays don’t fall directly on it for more than an hour or so. A few feet back from a south window, right beside an east window, or in front of a bright window softened by a sheer curtain. This is the sweet spot for the vast majority of popular houseplants: Monstera, Pothos, Philodendron, Fiddle Leaf Fig, Hoya, Calathea.
Medium light. The plant is in a bright room but not near the window, or near a north window. Your hand casts a soft, blurry shadow here. Snake Plants, ZZ Plants, Peace Lilies, Aglaonema, and Pothos will hold steady, though they’ll grow slowly.
Low light. No clear view of the sky, or a spot well across the room from a window. You can read comfortably, but your hand barely casts a shadow. Very few plants thrive here; a handful tolerate it (ZZ, Snake Plant, Cast Iron Plant, some Aglaonema). “Low-light plant” really means “survives low light,” not “wants it.”
The shadow test is the quickest gut check we know: hold your hand a foot above where the plant sits at midday. A crisp, dark shadow means direct light. A soft shadow with defined edges means bright indirect. A fuzzy, faint shadow means medium. Barely a shadow at all means low.
3. Reading Your Windows
Direction matters more than window size, so grab a compass app and figure out which way each window faces. This is for the Northern Hemisphere; flip north and south if you’re below the equator.
- South-facing: the brightest window in the house, with direct sun most of the day. Sun-lovers go on the sill; everything else sits a few feet back or behind a sheer.
- West-facing: strong, hot afternoon sun. Great for succulents and cacti, but it can burn thin-leaved tropicals in summer. Pull sensitive plants back or filter it.
- East-facing: gentle morning sun, then bright indirect light for the rest of the day. Honestly the easiest window to work with; almost everything is happy here.
- North-facing: no direct sun, just soft, even light all day. Good for ferns, Calathea, and other shade-tolerant plants, but too dim for anything that wants to bloom or grow fast.
Then look at what’s outside the window. A big tree, a neighbor’s wall, or a balcony overhead can turn a south window into a medium-light spot. Tinted glass and screens cut light more than you’d think too. And if your windows are streaky, cleaning them is one of the cheapest light upgrades there is.
4. Measuring Light Instead of Guessing
The shadow test gets you in the ballpark. If you want real numbers, a light meter for plants takes about ten seconds per spot and settles every “is this bright enough?” argument. Phone apps do a rough version with the camera; not lab-accurate, but fine for comparing one corner to another.
Rough foot-candle ranges, measured at the leaves around midday:
- Low light: 25–100 foot-candles
- Medium light: 100–250
- Bright indirect: 250–1,000
- Direct sun: 1,000 and up (a sunny sill can hit several thousand)
Take readings morning, noon, and late afternoon. A spot that peaks at 800 for an hour and sits at 150 the rest of the day behaves more like medium light. Re-check in winter, too. It’s humbling.
5. Signs Your Plant Is Getting the Wrong Light
Plants are pretty good at telling you when the light is off. You just have to know the vocabulary.
Too little light:
- Long, stretched stems with big gaps between leaves (the plant is reaching for a window).
- New leaves come in smaller than old ones, or growth stops altogether.
- Variegated plants go plain green as they make more chlorophyll to compensate.
- Leaves and stems lean hard toward the window.
- Soil takes forever to dry, and yellowing starts at the bottom.
- Flowering plants refuse to bloom.
Too much light:
- Bleached, pale, or washed-out patches on the leaves.
- Crispy brown scorch marks, especially on the side facing the window.
- Leaves that curl inward or downward to reduce exposure.
- Soil dries out almost daily and the plant wilts by afternoon even when watered.
A plant that leans, stretches, and stays wet is asking for more light. One that bleaches and crisps is asking for less, or for a sheer between it and the glass. Move it in stages: a plant that’s spent months in a dim corner will sunburn if you drop it straight onto a south sill.
6. Grow Lights: When and How to Use Them
There is no shame in supplementing. If your apartment has one north window and you love Monsteras, a grow light is the difference between a plant that survives and one that actually grows. They’re also the answer for winter, when even good windows go dim for months.
What to look for:
- Full-spectrum white LEDs. Skip the purple “blurple” bulbs; white full-spectrum LEDs work just as well and look like normal lighting.
- Enough output. Foliage plants want at least a few hundred foot-candles at leaf level. A tiny clip light a foot above a Fiddle Leaf Fig won’t cut it.
- A shape that fits the spot. A grow light bulb screws into a lamp you already own. A clip-on grow light suits a single plant or a small shelf. LED grow light strips are the move for plant shelves and IKEA greenhouse cabinets. A grow light panel covers a whole plant table.
How to run them:
- Distance: 6–12 inches above the canopy for most LEDs. Closer for stronger light, farther if you see bleaching.
- Duration: 10–14 hours a day. Plants need a dark period too, so don’t leave them on around the clock.
- Consistency: an outlet timer makes the schedule automatic and means the plant gets the same light whether or not you remember.
Grow lights don’t replace a good window, but paired with one they’ll carry a collection through the darkest part of the year without the usual leaf drop.
7. Small Tricks That Make a Big Difference
- Rotate plants a quarter turn every week or two so they grow evenly instead of leaning.
- Get plants up off the floor. A plant stand can move a plant from medium to bright light without changing rooms.
- Use the wall. Light-colored walls bounce light back onto plants. A mirror behind a plant shelf does the same.
- Keep leaves clean. Dust blocks light. Wipe big leaves with a damp microfiber cloth every few weeks.
- Use a sheer, not blinds. Blinds block everything or nothing. A sheer softens a hot window into ideal bright-indirect light all day.
- Shuffle in winter. From November through February, move the light-hungry plants closest to the windows and let the tough ones take the dimmer spots.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can plants get too much indirect light? Not really. “Indirect” by definition isn’t hitting the leaves directly, so it won’t scorch. What burns plants is direct sun, or a grow light placed too close.
Is a bright room without a nearby window “bright light”? Almost never. Light drops sharply with distance, so a plant eight feet from a window is usually in medium or low light, no matter how airy the room feels.
Will a regular LED lamp help my plants? A little, but household bulbs aren’t bright enough at plant level to make a real difference. A full-spectrum grow bulb in the same lamp is the easy upgrade.
My plant is fine in low light. Should I leave it? If it’s pushing new leaves and looks healthy, sure. If it hasn’t grown in months, it’s coasting on stored energy, and a brighter spot or a grow light will turn “surviving” into “thriving.”
Does the color of the light matter? Plants mostly use red and blue wavelengths, but full-spectrum white light has plenty of both. You don’t need colored bulbs for houseplants.
