Walk down the soil aisle and it’s a wall of bags that all promise the same thing: happy plants. Potting mix, potting soil, cactus mix, orchid bark, seed starter, “moisture control,” “organic,” “premium.” Some of those labels mean something. Some are just marketing.

Here’s the honest truth we wish someone had told us when we started: most houseplant deaths trace back to the soil, not the watering can. A plant sitting in a heavy, water-holding mix will rot no matter how careful you are with the schedule. A plant in the right mix forgives a lot. So this guide breaks down what’s actually inside each bag, which plants want which kind, and how to mix your own once you’ve got the hang of it.

1. “Potting Soil” vs. “Potting Mix” (Yes, There’s a Difference)

This trips up almost everyone, partly because the industry uses the terms loosely.

  • Potting mix is soilless. It’s usually a blend of peat moss or coco coir, perlite or vermiculite, and sometimes compost or bark. It’s light, fluffy, and sterile, which is exactly what you want indoors. When we say “soil” on this blog, this is almost always what we mean.
  • Potting soil can contain actual dirt: topsoil, sand, sometimes composted manure. It’s heavier, holds more water, and can carry fungus gnat larvae and weed seeds. Fine for an outdoor container. Not what you want in a pot on your windowsill.
  • Garden soil or topsoil is for the ground, full stop. In a pot it compacts into a brick, drains terribly, and suffocates roots.

If the bag says “for indoor plants” or “for containers,” you’re usually looking at a soilless potting mix. That’s the one. A good all-purpose indoor potting mix is the right default for the majority of common houseplants.

2. The Ingredients, Decoded

Every mix is some combination of the same handful of ingredients. Once you know what each one does, the label stops being mysterious.

The base (holds water and nutrients)

  • Peat moss (sphagnum peat): the traditional base. Holds water beautifully, slightly acidic. Downsides: it’s hard to re-wet once bone dry (water beads off the top and runs down the sides), and it’s a slow-renewing resource harvested from bogs.
  • Coco coir: ground coconut husk, sold compressed in bricks. Holds water like peat but re-wets easily, has a neutral pH, and is a renewable byproduct. This is our preferred base for almost everything. A coco coir brick expands to many times its size, so one brick goes a long way.
  • Compost / worm castings: add slow nutrients and beneficial microbes. A small amount is great. Too much makes a mix dense and gnat-friendly. Worm castings are the gentlest way to add fertility.

The aerators (create air pockets and drainage)

  • Perlite: those white, popcorn-like bits. Puffed volcanic glass. Lightweight, doesn’t break down, and creates air channels so roots can breathe. The single most useful thing to keep on hand. Buy perlite in a big bag; you’ll use it constantly.
  • Pumice: like perlite but heavier and doesn’t float to the surface when you water. Better for top-heavy plants and succulents. Horticultural pumice costs a bit more but lasts forever.
  • Vermiculite: the shiny gold-brown flakes. Unlike perlite, it holds water and nutrients. Good in seed-starting mixes and for thirsty plants, but too much of it and a mix stays soggy.
  • Orchid bark (fir bark): chunky pieces that create big air gaps and break down slowly. The backbone of any aroid or orchid mix. Keep a bag of orchid bark around if you grow monsteras, philodendrons, or anything that climbs.
  • Coarse sand: used in cactus and succulent mixes for weight and drainage. Must be horticultural or builder’s sand, never play sand or beach sand, which pack down.

The extras

  • Horticultural charcoal: absorbs impurities, helps “sweeten” a mix that stays damp, and is a standard ingredient in aroid blends and terrariums. Horticultural charcoal is optional but nice.
  • Wetting agents: added to peat-based mixes so they absorb water more easily. Not harmful, just something to know about.
  • Slow-release fertilizer: many bagged mixes include a few months’ worth. Helpful for the first stretch, but it’s why “the plant did great then stalled” happens around month four.
  • Moisture-control crystals: the “moisture control” mixes contain water-absorbing polymers. They’re designed for thirsty outdoor patio plants. For most houseplants they hold too much water for too long. We skip them.

3. The Main Types of Mix, and Who They’re For

All-purpose indoor potting mix

Best for: pothos, philodendron, peace lily, spider plant, dracaena, ferns, most “regular” foliage plants.

A balanced blend of coir or peat, perlite, and a little compost. Holds moisture for several days, drains reasonably well. If you own one bag of soil, it’s this one. Our only tweak: most bagged all-purpose mixes are a little heavy for indoor life, so we add a couple of extra handfuls of perlite per pot. Cheap insurance against overwatering.

Cactus & succulent mix

Best for: snake plants, aloe, jade, echeveria, haworthia, string of pearls, ZZ plants.

Gritty and fast-draining, with sand, pumice, or extra perlite and much less water-holding material. These plants store water in their leaves and stems, so they want soil that dries out fast. Even a cactus and succulent soil mix off the shelf often benefits from more grit; many bagged versions are still peat-heavy. If it feels like regular potting mix in the hand, cut it with pumice.

Aroid mix (chunky mix)

Best for: monstera, philodendron, anthurium, alocasia, syngonium, hoya, pothos if you want faster growth.

The mix that changed our monstera game. Aroids are mostly epiphytes or forest-floor plants with thick roots that want air as much as water. A chunky blend of bark, perlite, coir, and charcoal drains in seconds, never compacts, and lets roots breathe. Plants in a good aroid mix root faster, push bigger leaves, and are dramatically harder to overwater. A pre-blended aroid potting mix is a fine starting point, or mix your own (recipe below).

Orchid mix

Best for: phalaenopsis and most other orchids; also useful as a chunky ingredient elsewhere.

Almost entirely bark, sometimes with a little charcoal, perlite, or sphagnum. Not really “soil” at all. Orchid roots need to dry between waterings and grip something airy. Never plant an orchid in regular potting mix.

African violet mix

Best for: African violets, streptocarpus, other gesneriads, and many small flowering houseplants.

Finer and fluffier than all-purpose, with extra peat or coir and vermiculite to stay evenly moist without going soggy. These plants have fine, delicate roots that dislike both drought and heavy wet soil.

Seed-starting mix

Best for: starting seeds, rooting cuttings.

Very fine, very light, sterile, and low in nutrients (seedlings don’t need much at first, and salts can burn them). Not for established plants; it holds too much water and offers no structure for mature roots. Grab a bag of seed starting mix if you’re propagating in soil rather than water.

Sphagnum moss (on its own)

Best for: rooting cuttings, propagation boxes, rescuing a plant with damaged roots, and top-dressing moisture-lovers.

Long-fibered sphagnum moss holds a lot of water while staying airy, which is why it’s a propagation favorite. It’s not a permanent home for most plants and it breaks down and compacts within a year or so.

4. Mix Your Own: Three Recipes We Actually Use

Buying pre-blended is convenient. Mixing your own is cheaper per pot, lets you tune the mix to each plant, and honestly it’s a pretty satisfying Saturday-morning job. All parts by volume; a scoop, a cup, whatever you’ve got.

Everyday foliage mix
– 2 parts coco coir (or a quality all-purpose potting mix)
– 1 part perlite
– a small handful of worm castings per pot

Chunky aroid mix
– 1 part coco coir or potting mix
– 1 part orchid bark
– 1 part perlite (or pumice)
– a handful of horticultural charcoal
– optional: a small handful of worm castings

Gritty succulent mix
– 1 part potting mix or coir
– 1 part pumice or perlite
– 1 part coarse horticultural sand or extra pumice

Mix in a large plastic tub or a big bucket, dampen slightly so it isn’t dusty, and store leftovers in a lidded bin. Pre-dampening coir or peat before potting is a small step that saves you from the “water runs straight through” problem on day one.

5. Matching Soil to Pot (They Work as a Team)

Soil doesn’t act alone; the pot changes how it behaves.

  • Terracotta breathes and wicks moisture out through the walls, so a mix dries faster. Pair it with all-purpose mix for thirsty-ish plants, or with succulent mix for plants that want to dry out quickly. Terracotta pots with drainage are our default for anything overwatering-prone.
  • Plastic and glazed ceramic hold moisture longer. Use a chunkier, better-draining mix in these than you would in terracotta.
  • A drainage hole is non-negotiable. No mix on earth saves a plant sitting in a puddle at the bottom of a closed pot. Use a nursery pot inside a decorative cachepot if the pretty one has no hole.
  • Pot size matters more than people think. Too much soil around a small root ball stays wet for weeks. Go up one size at a time.

6. When to Replace Soil

Potting mix wears out. Organic components decompose, the structure collapses, air pockets close up, and salts from fertilizer and tap water build up.

Signs it’s time:
– Water runs straight through without soaking in, or pools on top and drains slowly
– The mix has shrunk away from the pot edges
– A white crust on the surface (mineral salt buildup)
– The plant is growing slowly despite good light and watering
– It’s been 12–24 months since the last repot

You don’t always need a bigger pot. Often the fix is simply shaking off the old, tired mix and repotting into fresh soil in the same container.

7. Common Soil Mistakes (and the Fix)

  • Using garden soil or dirt from the yard. Compacts, drains badly, brings pests inside. Fix: soilless potting mix, always.
  • Adding a layer of rocks “for drainage.” This one’s a myth. Gravel at the bottom actually raises the waterlogged zone up into the root area. Fix: skip the rocks, use a well-draining mix and a pot with a hole.
  • Buying “moisture control” for succulents. Almost guaranteed rot. Fix: gritty cactus mix.
  • Reusing old soil without refreshing it. Old mix from a dead plant can carry the problem forward. Fix: toss it (or bake it), and use fresh.
  • Letting peat-based mix dry out completely. It becomes water-repellent. Fix: bottom-water for 20–30 minutes to rehydrate, or switch to coir, which re-wets easily.
  • Ignoring fungus gnats. They breed in constantly damp, compost-heavy mixes. Fix: a chunkier, faster-drying mix, let the top inch dry, and yellow sticky traps to catch the adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use one mix for all my plants?
You can get away with a good all-purpose mix plus extra perlite for most foliage plants. But succulents, orchids, and big aroids genuinely do better in their own blends. Two bags (all-purpose and cactus mix) plus a bag of perlite and one of bark cover almost everything.

Is organic potting mix better?
“Organic” on a soil bag mostly refers to the fertilizer source and the absence of synthetic wetting agents. It’s not a quality guarantee. Look at the ingredients and how the mix feels in the hand; that tells you more than the word on the front.

Does bagged potting mix go bad?
Not exactly, but it degrades. Stored dry, an unopened bag is fine for a year or two. Once opened and damp, it can grow mold or host gnats. Keep it sealed and dry.

Do I need to sterilize soil?
Fresh bagged soilless mix is already effectively sterile. Only sterilize if you’re reusing old mix or using something you collected yourself.

Why is there mold on top of my soil?
Usually harmless white fungus on the surface of a mix that stays damp. Scrape it off, let the top dry out more between waterings, and increase airflow. If it’s persistent, the mix is probably too water-retentive for that plant.

What about semi-hydro / LECA?
A whole different approach with no soil at all. It works beautifully for some aroids and hoyas but has its own learning curve. We’ll cover it in its own guide.
